MDT chassis
To perform well and to get the full potential out of your rifle it is necessary that the stock will suit you well. This is a key factor that affects the score on the target. And because the classic stock does not suit everyone the chassis can help here. And there's a Canadian company really shining here - MDT...
There is more companies which make different types of chassis. Whether in Europe or North America. There is more reasons why we chose MDT. Their products are great the prices are very favorable and they are listening to their customers. And they are constantly innovating and growing. Well, what is more important to us in Europe - they are Canadians... And with them you can communicate very well and everything is easy and fast (you would not believe how important this is and it is not quite common).
Few years ago when we started offering weapons lending for our courses we had a relatively wide selection of rifles. In time we and our students began to move from classic stocks to chassis systems. And even in this segment we had a pretty wide selection - not everything is in the pictures...
Thanks to Beareka company we managed to get a source for MDT products and started using them in larger quantities. In the picture are Tikkas and Remingtons in HS3 chassis. We have been very successful with them and we are still using them.
The HS3 is a great chassis for precise shooting but tactics can also be done with it. However I wanted a tubular fore end from the beginning so I did it by myself for the HS3. After some time MDT came with the ESS which is a tactics related and already has a tubular fore end...
And the ESS has been very successful and it has also begun to appear in European competitions. Not only at the tactical ones but also on Long Range...
So what's the difference between the classic stock and chassis? The chassis have a different ergonomics than most of the stocks. They have an adjustable length of the stock the cheekpiece height and some even the height of the buttstock. Some are also folding which is convenient for transport and cleaning. They also usually have a pistol grip unlike normal stocks. It suits better to new style of shooting which is increasingly being used. Another important difference is the fit of the barreled action into the chassis / stocks. Classic stock whether made of wood or plastic suffers a bit from this. The action needs to be fit in the "bedding" to perform well. It is either factory (the better and more expensive ones) or a good gunsmith must take care of it. The chassis are mostly from aluminum (even with plastic parts) and the system fits directly into aluminum in the form of some type of block. They vary according to the manufacturers but in my experience in a good chassis it just performs well without any modifications. These two features (ergonomics and action to the stock fit) have a direct impact on the accuracy. In our experience - just replacing the stock with the chassis instantly improves the results on the target which is really measurable.
I used stock or chassis from different manufacturers. And thanks to that I can fully appreciate how good the MDT chassis are. Both ESS and HS3 on our school rifles have many times been able to proof us what they are capable of...
Based on the intensive testing of various components I'm going to build a whole new shooting system for the next season. And it should manage an almost impossible task - to be suitable both for target, Long Range and tactical shooting - which is a bit of a contradictory requirement. I already have the concept and some of the components. This year I carefully tested and compared everything to be ready to train in the autumn and to start on the full throttle at the beginning of the new season. And I am already sure that one of its basic components will be the MDT ESS chassis...
I will present individual chassis systems from the MDT in more details in separate articles in the following weeks. These will be for HS3, LSS XL Gen2, ESS chassis and their accessories.
